Vanishing urban watercourses

Shanghai has experienced urbanization since it was named a treaty port, which changes the original watercourse network greatly. The urbanization in Shanghai could be described as a transformation from the rural landscape of interlaced watercourse network to the urban image of chessboard morphology. Between 1900 and 1930, many watercourses were replaced by the roads for the extension and construction of the Concessions. This exhibit investigates the nexus between the urbanization and the watercourse changes to illustrate and analyze the nature of the urbanization of Shanghai by animation.
