Suzhou Creek Promenade along Changing Rd, Changning District
Echoing with the topic of 2019 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season “How Waterfronts Bring Wonderful Life To People,” the Site Project of Changning District features the theme “The Water of Promise” and presents discussions about the memories, lifestyle, and experience born by and of Suzhou Creek. Tianyuan Garden, the venue of Changning Site Project is located at a charming section of Changning Road along Suzhou Creek. The garden, popular among local citizens, is a continuous green belt of 34,500 sqm together with the green spaces on both ends. The skyway and sightseeing tower are iconic sights of Tianyuan Garden.
The exhibition consists of three parts, namely art intervention, precedents study and historical research, which are designed to interpret how life scenes created, how waterfront spaces formed, and how locality is shaped and interacts with life along Suzhou Creek. The curatorial team invites architects, artists, and designers to produce works specific to the site, including installations, lighting, sound, etc., to furnish the site with more possibilities. The precedents study focuses on the projects along Suzhou Creek implemented by Changning Government as a response to the appeals of waterfront space under different historical backgrounds. The historical research will go upstream and seek a new starting point for understanding Suzhou Creek through interviews. During the exhibition, the public activities will bring experts from different disciplines and residents together to talk about the past, present and future of Suzhou Creek.
